Your choice of domain name is critical to your success. Don't get stuck with a bad domain that you have put a lot of work into developing. Here are some tips to help you get started:
The domain should:
1. Be a .com.
2. Not have dashes or numbers.
3. If it contains words, it should contain at most three words and nothing other than the two or three words used.
4. If it doesn't contain words, it should be shorter than 8 characters and be non-ambiguous if you say it verbally to someone... for instance... Google or Hermusa or Memoso or Testivar.
Let's pretend your niche is miniature wargaming.
So you could get:
MiniatureWargaming.com (if available, this is the very best domain)
MiniatureWargamingHQ.com
MiniatureWargamingBlog.com
Or you could go with...
Miwargam.com
WarGam.com
Warlog.com
Just think about the super-successful sites on the web for any niche and model after what has worked in the past. Super short obscure names actually do better than longer keyword rich domains. Just look at all of the top domains for examples:
Microsoft
Google
Yahoo
Twitter
Facebook
Myspace
YouTube
None of them have a full keyword. All are very short and all are .com domains without numbers or dashes.
Keyword domains have a short term advantage by getting search engine ranking early. They can do pretty well too. We are using InternetBusinessBox.com for this domain and expect to do well. But bubox.com probably would do even better long-term had that been available.
Choose your domain name wisely. Nobody wants to switch domain names once they have thousands of links and are well known under the old name.
