SEO From A Cruise Ship
Kristi Daniels
I met another person living the Internet Business Lifestyle this morning after breakfast on deck of a cruise ship.
He had his MacIntosh laptop out and was trying to make a video connection to his company headquarters in Wyoming. After overhearing him failing for awhile, I introduced myself and told him why it just wouldn't work.
Our connection aboard the cruise ship is via satellite and while it is high speed once it gets started, most video protocols require a lot of handshaking and the one second delay cause by the satellite makes it impossible to use those protocols. Even if he chose a streaming protocol that didn't require fast handshaking, he would still experience a delay.
He thanked me and switched to audio. Most of the same problems exist with audio, but somehow his magical Mac was able to connect.
I overheard that it was 1 degree at his office in Wyoming. It was 27 degrees (about 80 degrees F) on the cruise ship. His office was asking him when he was going to be returning to Wyoming. Apparently, he had been traveling for quite a while before this cruise. He quietly gave all of the reasons that it would be a very long time... if ever.
At the end of the conversation, he made a jibe about the political situation in the U.S. Apparently the guy on the other end of the line blamed Bush for that. The guy on my end of the line where I could hear said something about it having been almost two years since that was supposedly fixed.
I can only guess about his politics. If you are still stuck in the U.S., you probably wouldn't understand them anyway. The politics of those of us who travel a lot aren't nearly as polarized as those still spending most of their time in the U.S.
I did talk to the guy on my side of the line later, but we didn't discuss politics. It's just too nice of a day. We did trade travel stories and talked about the Internet lifestyle a bit. His business is SEO. He builds links to the web-sites of other companies. His work is for medium sized companies making anywhere from a million a year in revenue to 30 million a year. They expect a guy they can talk to on the phone and I guess his connection with his office was pretty spotty, so he's disappointed that he can't effectively work from a cruise ship like I can.
He needs to be able to call and schmooze clients at these companies. Most of the telephone time is usually them trying to turn him into their general webmaster so he has a lot of skills in avoiding that while still making them feel good about working with him.
Although he won't be taking cruises anymore while working, he still has a ton of freedom to do his work from anywhere in the world and he had taken advantage of that fact. He hates the cold (having grown up in Wyoming), so he has visited every warm place in the world in the last three years since he took his business on the road. He last saw the others in his office in Hawaii last year for a company meeting.
They tease him every time he calls in, but he just turns the MacIntosh camera toward the parrot behind him or the monkeys playing around him (on a south pacific island) or just the women in bikinis. That usually shuts them up. Worst case, he trades temperatures with them as he did today and they agree that he's working from a better place.
In fact, their entire office has been emptying since he hit the road. They had 12 people working for their company. Now only 7 work in the office full time. The other 5 work from wherever they happen to be traveling most fo the time.
That's the Internet lifestyle. You can choose it too. There is plenty of room out here for you and we would love to meet you on a cruise ship or playing with the monkeys on some south pacific island. It's your choice.
Here's a good way to get started:
