Test Results: Optimum Posting Frequency

Internet Business Box

We just finished a test that had some really surprising results.

The test was very complicated to perform and took a lot of sites and a lot of time, but we finally have the results and they were truly shocking.

The test actually isn't directly about blog posting frequency, but the results do end up dictating how often you should post using an Internet Business Box powered site.

The test was actually designed to find out how often an email list should be mailed. A lot of marketers say that you will get a high unsubscribe rate if you email your visitors daily. They often advocate a staggered approach where you email a prospect the day they subscribe, then two days later, then four days after that and then weekly or less often after that.

Others such as master marketer Matt Furey (who actually does some testing) email twice a day. He claims a dramatic increase in profits when he increased to sending two emails per day instead of one.

Who is right? Is "unsubscribe rate" the right metric?

We don't think so. We think the only metric that matters is income over a period of time. It comes down to how many dollars you earn per day using method "a" versus method "b."

So we set out to test how often to email. We set up the following intervals for our first test:

a) Every day

b) Every other day

c) Every third day

d) Every fifth day

e) Every week

f) Every ten days

The results were remarkable. The more often we emailed, the higher our profits without exception.

Even more remarkable was when we peeked at our unsubscribe rate and found the exact opposite of what was expected. Our unsubscribe rate went UP with each successive increase in the amount of time between mailings. In fact, the weekly and every ten days mailings resulted in a list that was shrinking instead of growing because of all of the unsubscribes.

I suspect that is because people had a chance to forget us after an entire week or ten days. An email relationship is very weak compared to any kind of "in person" relationship. An entire week is a very long time and it is easy to forget that you even subscribed.

So we did a second test to zero in on the right email frequency.

We did:

a) every five hours

b) every ten hours

c) every 15 hours

d) every 20 hours

e) every 25 hours

f) every 30 hours

g) every 40 hours

The results were very clear. Every five hours was too often. Once again the unsubscribe rate soared and the profitability dropped.

But the winner of that test was "every ten hours."

The line is linear from that point all the way out to every 40 hours. The less often we emailed, the less money we earned. The optimum was every ten hours or 2.4 times per day.

What does that have to do with blog posting?

Remember that the Internet Business Box tries to take care of EVERYTHING that a computer can possibly handle for you. It succeeds in large part. It handles your email management tasks including creating your autoresponder series, your multivariate testing, adding and deleting links from your site directory and your blog roll, selling ad space on your site and even deleting blog posts that you write that actually cause you to lose money.

There is one thing that the Internet Business Box ca NOT do for you. It can NOT create content. A human being has to do that part. That should always be your focus with the Internet Business Box software. Let it figure out the best way to populate your menus, update your site price, create your autoresponder series and all of those tedious tasks.

You have to post good, high quality, desirable and persuasive blog posts. That is your job with any Internet Business Box powered blog site. That is really your only job. You write and post blog entries.

So how often should you post?

This test result indicates that the optimum frequency for posting is also 2.4 posts per day. Why? Because the Internet Business Box creates the autoresponder series from your blog posts. It uses your subject lines to create the emails that are designed to drive prospects back to your blog.

If you post less often than 2.4 times per day, the autoresponder may run out of material to send your longest term subscribers.

Besides, we know that the average Internet Business Box site earns $402/month after the first 30 days IF the owner posted at least one post per day. We know that it only earns about $8.66/month if no posts are made.

Common sense says that if you posted an average of 2.4 times per day, your earnings will be even higher than the average Internet Business Box owner who posts only once per day... and you will always have fresh material for the Internet Business Box to use for your autoresponder messages.
